A  Certificate of Compliance  is required when a house or business is about to be sold. We inspect for working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke detectors work best one in every bedroom. Carbon monoxide is required one per floor.

Smoke Detectors

  • ALL HOMES MUST HAVE TEN-YEAR SEALED BATTERY-POWERED SMOKE DETECTORS.
  • BATTERY OPERATED SMOKE DETECTORS MUST BE LOCATED:
  • ON EACH FLOOR (INCLUDING BASEMENT AND ATTIC)
  • WITHIN TEN (10) FEET OF ALL BEDROOMS.
  • BATTERY OPERATED SMOKE DETECTORS CANNOT REPLACE  HARDWIRED SMOKE DECTORS.
  • ALL HARDWIRED SMOKE ALARM SYSTEMS MUST BE OPERATIONAL.

Carbon Monoxide

• A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR MUST BE LOCATED IN THE:

WITHIN TEN FEET OF ALL BEDROOMS 

(THIS INCLUDES PLUG IN, BATTERY OR COMBINATION UNITS).

Fire Extinguishers

• A FIRE EXTINGUISHER (4TO 10 LBS INTERIOR WEIGHT) IS REQUIRED:

TO BE IN ALL KITCHENS

TO BE MOUNTED ON THE WALL NO HIGHER THAN FIVE FEET ABOVE THE FLOOR AS PER NJ TPE 2A:10BC


After closing of the house:

The new owner must complete a Certificate of Occupancy (required for owner occupied homes and tenants)  and also must schedule a Lead Inspection and a fee is involved.


If new owner is renting out the home, a Landlord Registration form must also be completed.

Certificate of compliance application

Chapter 90-33 of the Borough Ordinances requires a certificate of compliance. A certificate of compliance certifying compliance with Borough Ordinances entitled “Buildings, Unfit, and Housing Standards, and inspection of smoke detector & carbon monoxide alarm compliance.

It is the applicant's responsibility to contact the city to schedule an inspection ​after payment.
